Air Force Bans Greek Yogurt Containing Hemp Seeds

There’s a reason why nutrition experts (Men’s Fitness included) wax poetic about Greek yogurt and hemp seeds—the former packs twice the protein as regular yogurt, while the latter is chock full of essential amino acids. But the combination of superfoods has caused quite a stir with the Air Force, which had recently banned consumption of Chobani Blueberry Power Flip yogurt, prompting the Greek yogurt company to announce that it’ll be removing hemp from that flavor. (Blueberry Power Flip comes with a side of walnuts, chia and hemp seeds meant to be “flipped” into the Greek yogurt.)
So why is the Air Force not high on hemp? According to the service academy, hemp seeds have the potential to affect drug testing results. They contain trace amounts of THC, an active ingredient of marijuana. In an emailed statement to Men’s Fitness, Chobani spokesperson Amy Juaristi says: “Recently, we’ve heard some concerns from the military community about Chobani products containing hemp seeds, and want to set the record straight. Except for Blueberry Power Chobani Flip, no Chobani product contains hemp seeds. However, we’re committed to giving our fans what they want and are in the process of removing this ingredient from our Blueberry Power Chobani Flip. We greatly respect our armed forces and take pride in serving our troops.”
Chobani also told the Air Force Times that Blueberry Power Flip contains 1/20th the amount of THC that someone would need to consume to exceed the federal limit. In other words, blaming a failed workplace drug test on hemp seeds would likely carry as much weight as a homework-eating dog.

Superfoods are all the rage! From acai smoothies to kale chips, it seems like a new one pops up every month. But have you heard of hemp yogurt?
Of course, you can find many healthy foods in regular grocery stores, but you probably haven’t seen hemp yogurt. It’s a bit out of the mainstream.
That doesn’t mean that it’s not delicious, though. This super healthy yogurt may just get you addicted to your health.
Also, this yogurt isn’t really dairy, either. It’s an awesome vegan alternative to your Greek yogurt. You can eat it on its own or put some honey and granola on top.
What is hemp yogurt?
Hemp yogurt is a gluten-free, nutrient-rich yogurt that is produced using hemp milk. Manufacturers make it just as you would make a standard yogurt.
This dairy-free delight is high in protein, good fats, and is great for digestion.
Filled with protein, healthy fatty acids, fiber, vitamin E, minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium, is it any wonder that it is considered a superfood?
With a slightly ‘nutty taste’, hemp yogurt provides a lovely flavor and texture when made correctly. You can find it at farmer’s markets, in specialty food stores, and you can even make it yourself at home.
How do you make hemp yogurt?
Hemp yogurt is all about the ingredients. Made with hemp milk, water, hemp seeds, salt, sugar, yogurt culture, vanilla and maple syrup, this dairy-free delight is delicious.
There are thousands of recipes available on the internet for you to be able to create your own variety, even adding some olives or sun-dried tomatoes for a little extra fun.
Why not add some fresh fruit and nuts for a little variety?
Basically, you can either start with hemp milk or make the hemp milk yourself. Different recipes have different techniques, but you’ll add a bit of a binder to the milk like agar-agar.
Along with the binder, you need to add some yogurt cultures. Now, in regular milk, these cultures feed on lactose, a type of sugar. However, hemp milk doesn’t have much sugar on its own.
To grow the culture, you’ll have to add a bit of sugar or honey (or both). This will give the cultures something to use.
After that, the recipe may have you incubate the mixture at about 100 degrees. This encourages the fermentation process and will leave you with a yummy yogurt.
Are there any benefits?
Hemp seeds are a known superfood and provide many benefits. These include anti-inflammatory properties and support for your brain & heart function. There’s a lot to be said about hemp yogurt.
Besides the benefits to your body, you’re also helping the planet when you use hemp. The material is carbon-negative. This means it takes carbon out of the atmosphere even as a manufactured product.
There are many industrial uses for other parts of the hemp plant, so it’s great to use the seeds as well.
Hemp yogurt has a strong taste and is perfect when enjoyed with other fruits and berries, giving you a ton of nutrients.

With hemp yogurt still considered outside the mainstream, you may be able to find a tub at your local health food store, café or good vegan supplier.
