Organic Hemp Seed Bars

July 30, 2018 in Category: Product Stories

Organic Hemp Seed Bars

The history of hemp goes way back – farther back than actual recorded history goes, in fact. It’s largely considered to be one of the first plants ever cultivated by humans for use in making cloth or fiber, and there’s even a fair amount of evidence to suggest that it was the first plant to be cultivated by humans…ever! For close to 10,000 years, people have grown hemp to make rope, clothing, paper, and, in the form of hemp seeds, food. And now, after all that history (and pre-history), hemp makes a grand contribution to humanity’s most noble pursuit, snacking, with Trader Joe’s Organic Hemp Seed Bars.

Made for us by the same folks that make our Organic Chia Bars, our Organic Hemp Seed Bars start off with the same great premise: all organic ingredients, pressed together into a soft-textured, but still satisfyingly crunchy, grab-and-go snack. Each bar is crafted with organic almonds, cashews, crisped brown rice, gluten free rolled oats, wild blueberries, currants, and, of course, hulled hemp seeds. In addition to imparting a delicately earthy flavor, the hemp seeds also bring some serious nutritional benefits in the form of amino acids, fiber, and in contributing to each bar’s total 3g of protein—all for only 120 calories per bar!

With their mellow balance of nutty, crunchy, soft, and sweet, Trader Joe’s Organic Hemp Seed Bars are remarkably versatile. They’re equally fitting as a convenient breakfast treat on your morning commute, a quick mid-hike energy fix, or a post-soccer game goodie for when it’s your turn to be the team’s snack-supplier. Just remember, when you sink your teeth into one of these bars, you’re sinking your teeth into 10,000 years of agricultural history. Consider it research.

We’re selling each 4.4oz. box of five Organic Hemp Seed Bars for only $2.99. You’ll find them on our cereal shelves.

The Best $5 Molly Yeh Recently Spent at Trader Joe’s

Molly Yeh (star of Food Network’s Girl Meets Farm and baking Instagram sensation) unequivocally holds the coveted title of Queen of Sprinkles. Nonpareils, jimmies, sanding sugar, dragees — you name it, Molly sprinkles it over all of her stunning confections. Dare we say it? She’s Sprinkle Bae.

We recently got the chance to chat with Molly (courtesy of the folks over at the Milk, Love What’s Real campaign) and we asked her to name the best thing she bought at the grocery store recently for $5 or less. Funny enough, she revealed a totally different kind of sprinkle situation that she loves — from Trader Joe’s no less!

Here’s what she had to say: “I love Trader Joe’s Super Seed & Ancient Grain Blend. It has flax seeds, hemp seeds, amaranth, quinoa, chia. It’s not sweet — just crunchy!”

For $4.49, this pouch contains buckwheat, chia, flax, hemp, millet, quinoa, and amaranth. It’s a super-powered mix of seeds and grains that pack a big nutritious punch (think: fiber, omega-3 fatty acid, the works).

As the back of the package instructs, “Sprinkle on cold cereal, oatmeal, or yogurt; bake into muffins or quick breads; or just grab a handful and sprinkle into your mouth.” SPRINKLE!

Molly has found another reason to add this to her breakfast routine: “Since I’m pregnant, I have to have more omega-3s. I sprinkle this into my oatmeal in the morning and can tick off a nutrient.”

Per Molly’s recommendation, I headed to my local TJ’s to check these super sprinkles out. I put a few tablespoons on my Greek yogurt and was delighted by the satisfying crunch that it added, making my morning yogurt a little less sad. The only downside? I wish this mix had a little added sweetness. Maybe I’ll take a page out of Molly’s book and sprinkle this on a big ol’ cake. That’ll do.

Have you tried this seed and grain mix from Trader Joe’s? What’d you think?

Hint: It's not marzipan.
