Planting Sterilized Hemp Seeds

There is a technique that is followed to ensure that quality hemp crop is obtained. While planting sterilized hemp also these steps need to be followed. The steps have been outlined in this article.

Planting Sterilized Hemp Seeds

Sterilization of hemp seeds is done so that the hemp plant does not grow new plants and stays confined to a single generation only. Mostly sterilization is done with legal hemp seeds that have very little or almost no THC content. These plants not only produce lots of hemp seeds that are high protein containing food supplements but also offer landscapes with beautiful foliage. They can be planted in pots or on the ground beside other ornamental plants and naturally these plants are resistant to weeds. So they are easy to maintain and are a good way of adding a touch of greenery to a garden or backyard.

In order to grow sterilized hemp seeds, the following tips are to be followed.

A soil pH test needs to be conducted so that the planting site gets tested. The pH range of 5.0 to 7.5 is apt for hemp plants. In order to conduct the test, one has to dig a 6 inches deep hole, collect soil samples and send the samples to some soil testing laboratory nearby. After obtaining the results, lime needs to be added to acidic soil and sulfur needs to be added to alkaline soils.

Planting Sterilized Hemp Seeds

After the soil test, one needs to check drainage of the area because hemp seeds are sensitive to waterlogged areas or compacted soil. One can grab a handful of soil and squeeze it to check it for drainage. Soil that breaks is too dry and the one releasing little soil water drops is too wet. In order to get rid of waterlogged soil, lots of compost in equal amounts need to be added to the soil. Dry soil must be tilled and watered regularly till the composition seems normal.

Next step is to get rid of all the weeds and other vegetation in the area because these weeds suck up the nutrients from the soil. Herbicides can be used to get rid of weeds if they are too many in number for they compete with the hemp plant for water as well.

The soil needs to be tilled with a tiller. That way the soil reaches a temperature of 41 to 46 degrees F at the least. This can be measured with a soil thermometer. 250 to 400 seeds can be sown over a square meter of soil. These seeds must be covered with a thin layer of soil up to 1 inch thick with a rake. Care must be taken that the seeds do not get buried too deep for it might result in a varied emergence time.

Then the planting site needs to be watered thoroughly. This is to be followed with the application of a fertilizer with NPK ratio of 4-12-8.
The above can be followed with a soil pH test to ensure the soil acidity or alkalinity has not changed. Sometimes adding compost adds to the acidity so this test is vital.

The above steps must be followed properly to ensure that healthy hemp seedlings grow into healthy plants. A good tip to get quality sterilized hemp plants is to check the seeds before sowing them to ensure that that seeds planted are not damaged or discoloured.
