How long does it take to germinate cannabis seeds?

Before you get started it is good to know how long the germination of marijuana seeds takes. The germination time depends on the seed and method so there is no unambiguous answer to this, but germinating weed seeds usually takes 2 to 4 days.

The best way to germinate marijuana seeds

Although different germination methods exist, not all methods are equally successful. An example of a less efficient method is to plant the seed directly into the soil. This method is not recommended for two reasons.

First of all because non-germinated seeds can rot in the soil. Moreover, with this method you cannot determine the direction of the root.

Fortunately there are several efficient methods so let’s quickly tell you how best to germinate your cannabis seeds.

How to germinate weed seeds? Use our step-by-step plan!

We advise to germinate cannabis seeds indoors. Not in the light, but in the dark. Also when you want to grow outdoors. The root should not be exposed to (sun)light. Moreover, a young plant is young and often not resistant to changing weather conditions.

The best, fastest and safest way to germinate your marijuana seeds is to use two methods one after the other:

  • Method 1: Germinating cannabis seeds in a glass of water
  • Method 2: Further germination between damp kitchen paper
What do you need?

Before you start the germination process, it is useful to have all the supplies ready. This way you will be well prepared. You can read exactly what you need below.

  • Drinking glass
  • Water
  • Two ceramic plates
  • Kitchen paper or cotton wool
  • Plant sprayer
  • Optional: tweezers

Did you set everything up? Then the real work can begin.

Step 1: germinating weed seeds in a glass of water

For a successful germination process we advise you to first soak your seeds in water before germinating them further between damp kitchen paper. By soaking your seeds beforehand, the skin of the seed becomes soft and the root can easily come out.

How to germinate marijuana seeds in a glass of water?

Grab a glass and fill three quarters of it with lukewarm water. Attention: no cold or warm water. You can also use sterile water, but tap water is also fine. Drop your seeds carefully into the water. The seeds will first float (for a few hours) and then sink to the bottom of the glass. Your seeds don’t sink? Then carefully push the seeds to the bottom with the top of your finger. If the seed does float up again, wait for 2 hours and then carefully push the seed down again. Make sure you don’t crush the seed on the bottom.

Put the glass with the seeds in the dark for 18 to 36 hours with a temperature of 19 ° C to 25 ° C. A kitchen cabinet or other dark place is fine.

After a maximum of 36 hours, all seeds are sunk and often already partially germinated. Seeds that start germinating can be recognized by a broken skin where the white of the root becomes visible. In any case, do not worry if your seeds do not start germinating yet. The germination process has not yet been completed.

Step 2: Germinating your cannabis seeds with damp kitchen paper or cotton wool

After step 1 is completed you proceed to step 2. In this step you’ll need two ceramic plates and two sheets of kitchen paper. Do not use toilet paper, but real kitchen paper. Kitchen paper is thick enough to retain moisture for a longer period of time, which is very important.

Step 2 actually consists of 6 tasks. Take a look at the tasks below.

  1. Grab a plate and put two sheets of kitchen paper on it. The kitchen paper should completely cover the plate.
  2. Carefully pour your seeds with the water on the kitchen paper.
  3. Fold the paper towels over the seeds so that the seeds are between the paper towels. Make sure the seeds are in contact with the wet kitchen paper.
  4. Take the other plate and place it upside down on the plate with the seeds to create a dark space. Do not align the edges of the plates exactly. The seeds need oxygen to germinate.
  5. Check every 5 to 8 hours that the kitchen paper has not dried and if necessary re-wet the kitchen paper using the plant sprayer.
  6. After 24 hours, check whether the seeds have germinated. Is that not the case? Then check every 12 hours whether the seeds have germinated and keep the kitchen paper moist at all times.

Note: some seeds take 48 to 72 hours to germinate, but it can even take 168 hours (7 days). Patience is therefore required.

Step 3: Your weed seeds have germinated, and now what?

After germination and as soon as the root is about 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, the seed is ready to be planted. Want to know how to do that?

Germination Cannabis Seeds

You bought beautiful Premium Pro Seeds from Suzy Seeds and of course, you want to get started. First, you have to germinate the seeds. Below, I will discuss my favorite way how to germinate cannabis seeds extensively, but also suggest other good methods. Suzy Seeds exclusively sells feminized cannabis seeds, so you don’t need to remove male plants, which applies also to autoflower cannabis seeds. It’s good to know that a cannabis seed does not need light to germinate. What is important, though, is a humid environment and an ambient temperature of around 20 °C. In general, there are three ways to germinate cannabis seeds: – In a cup of water – On a damp surface – In soil. My favorite way to germinate the seeds is to put them in a cup of water and then between a damp paper towel. This goes well in 99% of the cases. How long does it take cannabis seeds to germinate in general? Or how do we germinate autoflowering seeds? The time depends on the strain or type of seed, but autoflowering seeds germinate in the same way and time as feminized or regular cannabis seeds. That is why I will more extensively describe this first way.

We recommend not to touch the seeds or the seedlings with your hands. If you do anyways, make sure your hands are clean and if possible use plastic gloves.

Suzy’s favourite germination method

Maintain an ambient temperature between 20 and 25 °C, otherwise, the seeds will not or at least not optimally germinate. Fill a cup with water and put the cannabis seeds in it. Get the seeds out of the water after 12 to 24 hours and spread them on a plate between two layers of damp paper towel. Put the plate in a dark and enclosed place. It’s important to make sure that the paper towel remains damp. I moisten the paper towel every 6 to 12 hours. Do not use too much water. The seeds only need to be damp. Within 48 to 72 hours, the seeds should pop open. But be patient, because it can take longer (6 days at the most). When the root becomes visible (the white sprouts as you can see on the picture above), you need to plant the germinated seeds. If you do not plant them in due time, the root can be damaged.

Suzy’s Tip: Try your germintion method on a couple of seeds (maximum 3). This way, you can test if your method works well. Often a wrong germinating method is used and the seeds don’t germinate. Do you want to germinate your seeds in a different way? Continue reading.

Germinating cannabis seeds in a cup of water

Maintain an ambient temperature of at least 20 °C, otherwise, the seeds will not or at least not optimally germinate. Fill a cup with water and put the cannabis seeds in it. After 3 to 5 days, the seeds should pop open and a tiny root should come out. As soon as the sprout is 2 to 3 mm, you can carefully get the seeds out of the water and plant them in the soil. Planting the germinated seed has to be done with lots of care and attention. Put them 0.5 to 1 cm in the soil with the root down. This way, the root (the white sprout) will more easily grow downwards.

Germinating cannabis seeds on a damp surface

Maintain an ambient temperature of at least 20 °C, otherwise, the seeds will not or at least not optimally germinate. Put the cannabis seeds on a surface that holds moisture, like wadding, paper towel or tissues on a saucer. Moisten the surface well, but avoid making it too wet. The moisture evaporates quickly at room temperature, so check during the period that the seeds will germinate if the surface is still damp enough. You can also cover the seeds with damp wadding or tissues and another saucer on top. Because of the moisture that gets into the seeds, they are activated and start to germinate. As soon as the germ is 2 to 3 mm, you can carefully get the seeds out of the water and plant them in the soil. Put them 0.5 to 1 cm in the soil with the root down. This way, the root will more easily grow downwards.

Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Germinating cannabis seeds in soil/compost

Direct germination of marijuana seeds in the soil is a commonly used method. You don’t have to handle the fragile plant, so it is not disturbed in its growth process. However, the chances that the seeds will germinate are lower than when applying the other methods. When using this method, it is important to use good soil. You can inform yourself about the different types of soil at your local grow shop. Maintain an ambient temperature of at least 20 °C, otherwise, the seeds will not or not optimally germinate. Put the cannabis seed about 1 cm deep in the soil. Cover the hole with some soil and gently press. The soil needs to be light so that the plant can easily grow to the surface. Solid soil is hard to penetrate for the roots and will cause a delay. The seeds will germinate under the ground and will come to the surface after 4 to 10 days.
