do female marijuana plants produce seeds

How To Tell If Your Female Cannabis Plant Has Been Pollinated

Pollination of your female cannabis plants will make them produce seeds and spend less energy on producing quality buds. But when you recognise the signs of pollination early, you can avoid putting time and resources into a poor harvest.

Contents:

There is a good reason why most growers keep male plants away from their ladies: Pollination from males causes the females to develop seeds. As a result, females focus their energy on seed production, rather than on growing you some fine-quality bud. This seedy and unfortunate final product can be avoided by implementing a few basic techniques.

Obviously, no one wants to smoke seedy weed. When you grow cannabis and learn how to identify male plants and signs of pollination, you can remove these plants to save your remaining females. Likewise, recognising a pollinated female early allows you to start again before it’s too late, rather than finishing a grow that will only result in a poor-quality harvest.

HOW TO TELL THAT A FEMALE PLANT HAS BEEN POLLINATED

Among the early signs that your female has been pollinated is that her bracts become larger. Bracts are small, leaf-like structures that protect the female’s reproductive parts. These are the sites from which the flowering buds appear. Do not confuse the bracts with calyxes.

A good test to see whether the bracts have swollen is to take a pair of tweezers, grab one bract, and open it up. If there is a seed inside, you have a pollinated plant.

Another indication of pollination can be the colour of her pistil hairs. When a female has been pollinated, the previously white hairs will soon shrivel and become darker.

HOW TO AVOID POLLINATION OF YOUR FEMALE PLANTS

Pollination requires the presence of males or intersex (hermaphrodite) plants, which are females that will also produce pollen. The first thing you want to do to keep the risk of pollination low is to remove as many males or “hermies” as as you can. Especially during the first three weeks of flowering, it’s important to frequently check for possible male specimens in your garden.

The typical cannabis grower normally doesn’t have a reason to keep males, and will want to get rid of them as soon as they are spotted. Cannabis breeders, on the other hand, may want to keep males along with their crop of female plants. In such cases, the breeder will normally separate the sexes to avoid any accidental pollination. They may grow females in one tent and males in another. When grown outdoors, such as in a garden, the males are often kept in the most remote corner of their growing area, as far from the females as possible. Even then, because of the wind carrying around the pollen, there is always some risk of accidental pollination.

HOW TO SPOT MALE CANNABIS PLANTS

To determine the sex of your cannabis plants, you will have to wait until the pre-flowering stage when plants begin to put their energy into reproduction. Female cannabis plants show their gender signs later than males. At the location where they will soon grow their buds (the nodes between the stalk and the stem), females will show wispy white hairs.

Male plants won’t show hairs at these nodes, but will develop little sacs of pollen. These pollen sacs will look like little balls. These balls can appear on their own or in clusters, depending how far into the pre-flowering stage the plant is. At some later stage of growth, the pollen sacs will burst open, spilling the pollen and possibly pollinating your females.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR FEMALES GET POLLINATED?

Spotting male cannabis plants and pollinated females early can save you from investing further time and effort into an entire growing season that will be for naught. Most of the time, the best course of action is to get rid of the males along with your pollinated ladies and just start a new grow.

HOW TO AVOID THE ISSUE OF POLLINATION

There is, of course, a way to avoid the issue of pollination altogether for the home grower. As a result of innovation in the modern cannabis industry, feminized seeds are now available in a wide variety of new and legendary strains. Unlike with regular seeds, you won’t need to even worry about identifying or separating males during your grow. As long as your feminized seeds are sourced from a reputable retailer, all seeds will grow into plants with smokable bud. With this knowledge, it is up to you to decide what kind of seeds will suit your growing parameters and personal goals as a cultivator.

Learn about the process of pollination and why you should avoid pollination of your female plants at all costs.

Do female marijuana plants produce seeds

i’l get this in before the pros answer, i think it can happen if you just keep letting the plant flower past ripeness, the plant has one goal in mind, the next generation, it knows it hasn’t been pollinated and has no seeds , i dont know the process but to save her genetic line she auto produces a seed or two.

shit am baked i might be very wrong.

I have found a few seeds in none pollinated females, i found a few seeds in a dinafem bluehash, clone came from a single mom fem seed. LOL was a ufo freebie!

There are serveral reasons why a Fem. Plant can carry / Produce Seeds

1. somewhere is a Male Plant (can be Pollen over miles whit wind)
2. as a Member sayed Stress can be a reason too (dual sex)
3. Instabil genetiks mostly fem seed can be dual sex whtiout doing enything wrong

Immaculate conception is for believers. Biology is real.

No matter how much a cannabis plant is “tricked” with stress, chemical or environmental, a grain of male pollen must pollinate a female ovule to produce a viable seed. The pollen can be produced many ways, but male pollen must appear and fertilize the embryo.

You guys are fun, ask more questions. I will send you to do your homework and you will become better medicinal cannabis gardeners and seed producers.

Pretty much this. You guys seemed to be missing his general question to which the answer is no. It is not possible to get a seed without pollen. All of the other statements about stress induced pollen production from hermies and male pollen travelling from a long distance is true don’t get me wrong, but in this case I agree with Jorge.

No pollen does not a seed make. /thread.

Could the male pollen come from the female plant itself and thus pollenate? is a female plant able to produce its own pollen if ‘stressed’? i had 3 blue cheeses in my room and after very bad timing of the light, bad temp and waaaay bad fert they become skinny long and completly seeded at the heads, could this be something to do with what is being discussed?

The answer to this is a yes. What happened to your plants is that they became so stressed they turned into hermaphrodites which is when the cannabis plant self-fertilizes itself by growing both male and female cannabis sex parts which can occur as a result of bad genetics or over-stressing the plant which is unfortunately all too common with cannabis cultivation.

In my growing experience I have had this happen several times and here’s why in my opinion; A female cannabis plant has one goal which is to flower and reproduce. This plant is amazing because it can adapt, or change depending on the environment in which it lives. Sometimes a female plant that does not have access to male flowers and there pollen will turn into a hermaphrodite in order to reproduce. This means that the female will produce male flowers and pollinate it self to continue it’s life cycle. One year I grew a big bushy haze hybrid that was in full bloom when I noticed a couple of male flowers had appeared. I tried to remove all the flowers but some pollination did occur which resulted in seeds that were 100% female. Stress is a big factor on cannabis and is usually the reason for hermaphrodites and male flowers to pop out on female sensi plants. Thanks for letting me share my experience here, peace and good vibs!!

i see, so because the only that one plants DNA went into producing the seeds, all the seeds would be pretty much clones of it, (all female). is this the only way to get female seeds?

UH OH . lmao not true Jorges 🙂 how are feminizied seeds made? thats right spraying Colloidal Silver ( a silver infused water) onto a female plant. the silver causes the plant to produce male hormones in the sections sprayed thus producing a single genetic parent . i use this method to seed out one branch when i need more seeds 🙂 works every time.

Now its not immaculate Jorge 😉 every plant has the ability to become male because the genes are dormant in the plant . the Colloidal Silver brings these genes into play and sexes the plant with its own genes making a genetic copy of the mother ( cloning by seed)

hope this helps 🙂

Sometimes they put out a few male flowers no stress needed, it just happens.

Ill take the seeds if you dont want them 🙂

Here is a passage from the Cannabis Encyclopedia on increasing provability of female plants in a seed.

How to Help Ensure
Female Seedlings
Ethylene diluted in water and sprayed on
cannabis plants increases the number of
female flowers and decreases the number
of male flowers. To have the fullest
effect, the hormone must be applied
before pre-flowers appear. At this point
plants are in the process of designating
their sex, male or female.
Ripening fruit (especially bananas)
releases a lot of ethylene. Several bunches
of bananas can be set in a small, enclosed
garden room containing the plants.
Large quantities of ethylene can be
generated through the use of a catalytic
generator, available from http://www.
catalyticgenerators.com.
The spray releases a gaseous vapor of
ethylene. Ethylene gas surrounds and
overwhelms plants with the female
hormone, promoting female tendencies.
When enveloped in female hormone,
cannabis plants designate sex and soon
start producing female hormones, female
pre-flowers, and, later, female flowers.
See chapter 22, Additives, for more
information on the hormone ethylene.
Note: Some of the products that
release ethylene are plant growth regulators
(PGRs). See chapter 22, Additives.
Note: Ethylene sprays can be phytotoxic
when not diluted properly or when they
are applied in hot weather.

As a grower of both Photo and auto cannabis plants, I dont care for genetics that still have the Hermie trait.. IMO That’s “bad” genetics, and Ill Cull any non forced Hermie plant that is in my garden.. yes it true cannabis will grow male balls very late in bloom for natural reasons.. yes I grow seedless cannabis and for that reason I must “not” use bad genetics that will Hermie!! Same if I was to breed out a auto or photo, I would “never” allow my genetics to ever Hermie and be sold.. This is why “testing” is so important.. to make sure the genetics you grow are legit.. if they Hermie IMO the breeder needs to get that sorted!!

In 2016 no excuse. Also If you grow Hermie seeds Those plants will also most likely be a boy/girl.. I like my beans AKC certified! 81173
hawkeyes those girls are very pretty.. Did you by chance have any light pin holes in your room? they are photos right? you never know these days. i see those sativa leaves!!

Your right riffle.. But like you said, your spraying CS on a “normal” Good genetic female making her fem herself.. Not the same as a female that does this own her own.. If your room is tight and no light holes on dark and you get hermies.. check on your breeder.. hermies are not medical cannabis!! No place dispensary is going to buy that But No its not like a clone when you spray CS, they just dont have a male crome zone.. thats it! you will still have phenotype unlike a true clone. ill say it again, its 2016 , ya better bring your A game.

I was going through some of the bud i have and found a couple seeds just curious to know if a female havest plant could contain a few seed with pollen from a male plant
