CBD Oil Dosage Chart – How Much CBD Oil Should I Take?
A person with a good endocannabinoid tone won’t need as much oil, and may also find their experience with CBD to be more subtle. On the other hand, an individual with more pressing health matters may need to increase the CBD oil dosage to help tone the endocannabinoid system into balance.
CBD oil is similar to a multivitamin. It takes time to build up within the body and produce benefits. Read the CBD Tincture Guide to learn more.
We can experiment with proper CBD dosage based on a few things: your weight and how you want to take CBD oil. But before we get to the chart, let’s first understand what a starting dose of CBD looks like.
Can You Overdose On CBD?
There have been no reported overdose deaths from CBD or other hemp products.
Pure CBD oil is non-toxic and has been tested in human trials in doses up to 1500mg-2000mg in a single day without significant side effects (source).
However, there is little evidence that an extra large dose can result in substantial additional health benefits. The endocannabinoid system acts to balance the body. Once it is activated and sufficiently well-oiled, it performs its function.
Since an effective dose is well below the tested limits, it’s not practical to waste money on megadosing CBD.
CBD Dosage based on weight
A good general calculation for effective CBD dosage recommendations based on weight is 1 milligram of CBD per every 10 pounds you weigh. In other words, divide your weight by ten to get your recommended daily dosage in milligrams.
[Your weight in pounds] ÷ 10 = [your daily dose in milligrams]
For example, if you weigh 150lbs, 15mg per day may be a good baseline CBD dose recommendation for you.
Begin with a bit less than this baseline if you prefer to be cautious, or add a bit more if you’re seeking rapid results.
CBD users with an average weight between 150lbs and 240lbs find that a dose between 15mg and 20mg once or twice a day is enough to provide effective relief from a variety of ailments.
Check our CBD oil dosage chart below, as even mild dosages of 12mg per day can provide real noticeable relief.
CBD Dosage Chart
General CBD Oil Dosage Guidelines
The chart above can help you determine the proper amount of CBD to take. Start with the low dose for a week and notice the effect. Take the amount recommended for your weight. If you aren’t feeling the effects, move up to the standard dose. Try the high dose range if the medium range does not produce the desired results.
The proper dosage all depends on your health and your body. Experiment to find out what works best for you.
As Dr. Dustin Sulak, director of Integr8 Health, says “Some patients effectively use tiny amounts of cannabis while others use incredibly high doses. I’ve seen adult patients achieve therapeutic effects at 1 mg of total cannabinoids daily, while others consume over 2000 mg daily without adverse effects.”1
While you might not notice an immediate effect while taking CBD oil, over time you should begin to detect more balance, calm, and peace of mind in your life.
Some people may notice a more extreme difference than others. Imagine someone who is deficient in vitamin C. Taking a vitamin C supplement would result in a radical change in their health. Someone with healthy vitamin levels would likely not react in the same way.
CBD oil is similar to a vitamin in that it helps to support and maintain overall health. If your endocannabinoid system is depleted or imbalanced, taking CBD could produce tremendous changes more quickly than someone who has a healthy endocannabinoid tone.
If you’re already healthy, you may not notice an immediate effect. While your friends or family may start taking high doses of CBD oil and notice instant changes, you may not need the same amount.
Maintenance CBD Doses vs Therapeutic CBD Doses
Heavier doses of CBD may be necessary when your body is way out of balance. And once you are in good health, you may only require a much smaller dose to maintain the benefits.
For example, you may take extra vitamin C when you get a sore throat or when traveling to give your immune system an extra boost. Yet you only take a recommended daily amount of vitamin C for general immune support when you’re feeling well.
What’s The Best Time of Day To Take CBD?
When to take CBD may depend on what benefits you are seeking.
If you’re looking for focus and calm during the day, you may have CBD with your morning tea or coffee. If you want restful sleep after a long day of work, you may prefer taking CBD in the evening.
How much hemp oil should I take per day?
How many times you take CBD during the day also depends on why you are taking it.
For maintaining general good health, taking CBD once a day with your vitamins may be sufficient. However, if you find CBD gives you benefits throughout the day, you may get better results taking it multiple times a day.
There are three main CBD oil dosage schedules that people use to take CBD:
- Once or Twice Per Day
- Every 2-3 Hours
- Hourly Microdosing CBD
When finding your ideal dose of CBD oil, we recommend starting with one-quarter dropper 1-2 times per day during the first week, moving up to one half a dropper during the second week, three-quarters of a dropper during the third week, and a full dropper on the fourth week.
In a paper published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine, Dr. Caroline MacCallum and Dr. Ethan Russo shared a good tip for figuring out a proper dosage of CBD, “Start Low and Go Slow!” 2
CBD BALM DOSING: Depending on the strength of CBD Balm, you may have to apply a little or a lot. Hempure CBD Balm is concentrated (750mg and 1400mg), so a little bit is very effective. Apply a small amount to the area where you are experiencing soreness, dryness, or stiffness every six hours.
CBD EDIBLES DOSING: Gummies and capsules produce the longest effect. Take one 10-25mg gummy or capsule every 6-12 hours and then increase if you’d like a more pronounced result. Like all Hempure CBD products, our gummies do not contain THC, so you don’t need to worry about any psychoactive effects. Capsules can be used on a similar schedule (every 6-12 hours).
CBD Oil Dosing Guide
Remember, that dosing CBD oil depends on the product. Most companies provide CBD dosing guidelines on the bottle, but those guidelines are specific to the potency of the product. What this means is, the dosing chart on a 1000mg CBD drops would not be ideal for someone who is highly sensitive to CBD and could do better with the potency of 250mg CBD drops. That’s why it’s important to experiment with the lowest strength first! The below CBD oil dosing chart can help you decide how much of a specific CBD product to use to get the most desired results.
When consuming CBD, it could be useful to use a notebook or an app to chart any changes you find in your mood, sleep, and general wellbeing. You could use this as a guide to determine the best CBD dose and best CBD dosage schedule for yourself. It can be your very own diary of dosing CBD!
How To Calculate CBD Oil Doses In Milligrams per Milliliters
Many CBD brands list the total amount of CBD in milligrams (mg) on product packaging without the serving size prominently displayed. Hempure CBD Oil Drops list the CBD mg serving size per full dropper on the backside of the label. However, others may not.
To calculate how many milligrams of CBD is in one-milliliter dropper of oil, divide the total amount of milligrams by the total milliliters in the bottle.
[CBD in mg] ÷ [bottle size in ml] = [CBD in mg per ml]
For example, here are the serving sizes for Hempure CBD Oil Drops:
How Much CBD Should I Take for My Specific Concern?
If you’re looking for therapeutic benefits from CBD, it’s best to consult with your physician first to help you decide how much CBD oil to take. Make sure to take a look at the dosing guidelines on the bottle as well. If you’re on medication, speak to your doctor about any possible interactions.
Figuring Out How Much CBD Oil To Buy
When you’re just starting out with CBD oil, it can be tempting to go for a concentrated strength because it seems cost-effective. In reality, starting out with potent CBD is counterproductive in the long term. Most CBD users, particularly those that use it as a wellness supplement, find that a little goes a long way. You might find that just a couple of drops a day of 250mg CBD oil does the trick for you.
On the other hand, if you flood your system with CBD, you could end up building a tolerance (even though it’s pretty unlikely) or not feeling anything at all. To reiterate, start low and go slow! More importantly, don’t stock up on a product you haven’t tried – buy just one bottle when you start out. That way, if you feel the need to increase your dosage, you have the option to level up on your next purchase.
The Primary Factor In How Much CBD You Consume
Like with everything else, quality matters more than quantity with CBD. Here are some guidelines to follow to make sure your CBD dosing process is as accurate as possible:
Make sure you’re purchasing CBD oil.
There are tons of oils on the market that consumers commonly mistake for CBD oil. Let’s explore the most common ones:
- Hemp oil: A common misconception people have is that hemp oil is synonymous with CBD since CBD comes from hemp. This is not true. Hemp oil, while very nutritious comes from hemp seeds, while CBD comes from the plant. Hemp oil may contain traces of CBD, but not enough to have any significant effect. To circumvent legal scrutiny, some companies may even market their CBD oil like hemp oil, even providing a hemp oil dosage at the back. This is misleading for a consumer, especially a new one. It’s best to go with a company that uses the term CBD oil.
- Cannabis oil: Cannabis is a plant species that includes both hemp and marijuana. People consume marijuana recreationally because of the THC in it that has psychoactive properties. Hemp, on the other hand, is very low in THC (less than 0.3%). So when a product is labeled cannabis oil, the spectrum of things it could be is very large. Cannabis oil could be THC dominant, CBD dominant, or some blend of the two. Once again, if you’re looking for CBD oil, choose a product that markets itself as CBD oil.
Make sure your CBD oil label is honest.
Unfortunately, several CBD companies intentionally mislabel their products, putting in less CBD or none at all in some cases. When you’re starting out with CBD, check a company’s website for third-party lab test results. These should be readily available for your perusal. If you’ve confirmed that the amount of CBD on the label matches the amount in the bottle, you’re good to go. If you’re taking unverified CBD oil that happens to be mislabelled, it would defeat the purpose of spending time figuring out how much CBD to take. You can find Hempure’s lab test results here.
CBD Dose for Pets
Your dog or cat can experience the same benefits from CBD as you.
According to clinical studies, CBD dosage recommendations for dogs and cats do not differ substantially from people based on weight. Additionally, there is no concern for CBD overdose for pets as it has been given in very large doses to animals in clinical settings with no significant adverse effects.
How much CBD does my pet need to experience the benefits?
The weight of your pet is a good place to start. A simple formula for CBD dosing for dogs and cats is 0.1 milligram of CBD per day for every pound your pet weighs.
Pet Weight Daily CBD Dose
Therapeutic CBD Dose For Pets
If your pet is suffering from severe health conditions or immobility, heavier doses of CBD may be required to see results. An effective therapeutic dose may be double the amount based on the weight formula. More than that isn’t always more effective.
Baylor University researchers recently gave dogs 20mg of CBD versus 50mg to study the effects on joint pain. They found 9 out of 10 dogs showed benefits whether they had 20mg or 50mg.
In other words, both dosage levels were equally effective. So megadosing CBD for pets doesn’t seem to offer additional benefits either. Finding a minimum viable dose for your pet is important because high quality CBD is precious.

Key Points To Remember When Dosing CBD
There are a few key points to remember when determining the proper amount of CBD to take:
- Start slow and work your way up. CBD oil works at the root level of health to balance out the entire body.
- There is not one “right amount” to take. Each person will react differently to different dosages depending on their current endocannabinoid tone.
- Use the chart as a starting guide until you figure out which amount works best for you.
Enjoy the process and the wonderful calm, peace of mind and relief that CBD oil can bring into your life. If you’d like to find out more about CBD, be sure to read our CBD guide.
CBD Oil Dosage: How to Take Cannabis Oil and How Much You Need
You’ve probably heard about the health benefits of CBD, but how much should you take to feel those?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of over 60 active compounds in the cannabis plant. These active compounds, known as cannabinoids, affect your body in many different ways.
CBD isn’t psychoactive, which means you will not get high. Instead, there are several pieces of research that says it can help you:
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Improve sleep
- Reduce seizures in people with epilepsy
- Soothe pain and inflammation
- Improve heart health
- Improve symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
No matter what condition you’re trying to treat with CBD, giving yourself an accurate dosage is key, or it might not help against severe conditions like back pain.
Different ways of taking cannabis oil
You can buy different CBD products both online and from a shop, ranging from CBD oil, cookies, ice cream, massage oil and much more.
Depending on if you want to treat conditions like stress, anxiety or better sleep you want the oil to enter the bloodstream. Once the CBD is in your blood it interacts with certain elements to decrease your stress.
If you have knee pain it is better to massage the CBD directly to the knee to get the best effect.
The two most popular ways of consuming CBD is either under the tongue or massaging it onto the body.
Drops under the tongue
We recommend taking CBD oil under the tongue for the best effect, also called “sublingual application”. You simply drop the desired amount under the tongue and let it stay for at least 20 seconds, then swallow.
The longer the oil is under the tongue, the faster the effect comes for you.
The reason why you keep the oil under the tongue is that you have a lot of veins that quickly absorbs the oil into your blood system. If you take sublingual CBD you can expect to feel the effect within 15-45 minutes, depending on the disease you want to treat.
Further down you can read how many drops you need to take.
On the body
Apply topical products such as massage oils, creams and balms directly to the skin over a painful area. So-called “topical application”
Using CBD on the body works best if you have a specific area where you need CBD the most. It allows the cannabidiol compounds to work right where you apply the topical cream.
With CBD topicals, the effects are more concentrated because the oil never gets absorbed into the bloodstream and they aren’t spread thin throughout the entire body. This makes it a great choice for treating minor pain in muscles and joints, or soothing skin after being out in the sun.
Do not apply CBD oils that are designed for taking orally to the skin. They have nothing to keep them on the skin or make them work there because they are supposed to be in your blood.
Figuring out the right amount
Research from 2017 showed that there’s no universal dosage of CBD that a person should take. Everybody responds differently to CBD, but most people take between 20 and 100 mg per day.
Therefore, we always recommend starting small and gradually working your way up. The amount of hemp oil you take might not be the same as your girlfriend need.
The amount of CBD you should take depends on a range of factors, including:
- Your body weight
- The condition you’re treating
- Your individual body chemistry
- The concentration of CBD in each drop, massage oil or candy
We recommend starting by dosing 20 to 40 mg a day. After a week, increase this amount by 5 mg. Continue this until you feel that it’s effectively treating your symptoms.
If you are a heavy guy with severe back pain, we recommend starting with 40 mg. You take this on days when you’re in a lot of pain. After a week you can increase to 45 mg, and next week you use 50 mg. At this point, you might feel that your pain is tolerable.
How to calculate CBD oil dosage
Some products, such as Midnight CBD Oil tell you how much CBD is in a single bottle and serving. The product also comes with additional information on how much you should take for different ailments you want to treat.
However, sometimes it’s harder to figure out how much CBD is in one drop because the packaging specifies the total amount of CBD in the entire bottle, but not the amount that will be in a single drop.
The first thing you need to know is how many millilitres your bottle is. The next step is knowing how many ml a drop of liquid is (normally 0.05 ml). The final step is to see how much CBD your bottle consist of
Here’s an example:
- One drop – 0.05 millilitres (ml)
- Bottle size – 10 millilitres (ml)
- CBD in the bottle – 1,000 mg
The equation for taking 40mg of CBD oil:
Bottle size/one drop = Total amount of drops in your bottle
10/0.05 = 200 drops
CBD in the bottle/total amount of drops = How much mg CBD per drop
So, to have 40 mg of CBD oil, you should take eight drops.
CBD oil dosage from a ‘random shop’
Some products don’t come with a label on how much CBD they contain. Some even contain THC which is the product that will make you high.
Whether the product contains THC or not is dependent on which extraction method the producer has used. Make sure to ask the owner of the shop if the oil contains THC. If it does you will get high. This is something we have noticed when we have bought oil from our competitors online, but also smaller health shops in the countryside here in Thailand.
You can usually get two types of oil if you buy it from a random shop, which contains different levels of concentration:
- Pure CBD oil – Dark colour, sluggish, musk smell and tastes like a mix of soil and leaves. This oil is usually more expensive since it is very concentrated. We recommend starting with 1 drop of oil.
- CBD & Mixed oil – Yellow/white colour, runny, smells coconut and tastes coconut (or whatever its been mixed with). The CBD oil has been diluted with coconut/sesame/vegetable oil and you need to take a bigger dosage. Start with 4 drops.
Wait at least one hour. If you don’t feel any effects you may take an additional dosage of 1 drop of pure CBD oil or 4 drops of CBD & coconut oil.
Is it possible to take too much CBD?
Research shows that continuous use of CBD, even in high doses like 1,500 mg a day, is okay for humans.
To put 1,500 mg in perspective you need to take 2.5 bottles of Bloom’s CBD oil to reach this. Cancer patients take somewhere around 500 mg a day, so it is safe to say you cannot take too much CBD.
However, if you’re currently taking strong medications and would like to try CBD, it’s essential to discuss this with your doctor.
Avoid CBD if your medications have a grapefruit warning on the label. This warning indicates that people taking the medication should avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
There are very few known side effects of CBD. When side effects do occur, they can be diarrhea, appetite changes, and fatigue. However, it usually goes over fast.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to buy CBD oil, you can find many CBD brands online. But make sure you research each brand before purchasing. While pure, genuine CBD is considered safe, fake and low-quality products can make you unintentionally high.
At Bloom, we only sell tested and legal premium CBD products. Whether you prefer taking CBD oil under the tongue or eating CBD infused popcorns, you can be sure to get a safe and relaxing experience with Bloom.
